Abstract:

Objective: Mentha longifolia L. Hudson has been used in folk medicine for various purposes especially for its anti-inflammatory effects. Lymphocytes play a central role in development of inflammation. In the present study, we investigated the immunomodulatory effects of different extracts of M. longifolia on human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs), as main players in development of inflammation. Materials and Methods: PBLs stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) were cultured in the presence of the plant extracts. The effects of the extracts on activation of cells were determined by BrdU assay. The viability of cells was examined by flow cytometry using propidium iodide staining. Also, IFN-γ (T helper 1, TH1) and IL-4 (TH2) secretion was measured by ELISA.  Results: Except for the water extract which had a weak inhibitory effect, treatment of cells with more than 1μg/ml of butanol, hexane, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane extracts resulted in strong inhibition of cells proliferation (IC50 4.6-9.9 µg/ml). Flow cytometry analysis showed that these extracts at ≤10μg/ml were non-cytotoxic. Dichloromethane and ethyl acetate extracts at 10 μg/ml decreased IFN-γ production in a dose-dependent manner from 919±91.1 pg/ml in PHA-only-treated cells to 568±22.6 pg/ml (in dichloromethane-treated cells) and 329±12.3 pg/ml (in ethyl acetate-treated cells) (p

Effects of Aqueous and Ethanolic Leaf Extracts of Mentha Longifolia on Morphine Dependence in Mice

The effects of aqueous and ethanolic leaf extracts of Mentha Longifolia on morphine dependence were examined in mice. Dependence was induced using subcutaneous injections of morphine daily for 3 days. On day 4, the last dose of morphine was injected 2 h perior the intraperitoneal injection of naloxone. The number of episods of jumping during 30 minutes after injection of naloxane was considered...

Evaluation of anticancer effect of Mentha longifolia and Artemisia persica hydro-alcoholic extracts against human gastric cancer cells (AGS)

Abstract: Introduction: Cancer treatment by medicinal plants has long been of interest to researchers. In the meantime, some plant species contain substances which can inhibit or eliminate cancer cells through apoptosis or necrosis. The family of mint and chicory are among the medicinal plants that have many biological effects. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticancer effec...

Repression of Matrix Metalloproteinases and Cytokine Secretion in Glioblastoma by Targeting K+ Channel: An in Vitro Study

Introduction: Glioblastoma is an aggressive malignancy of human brain with poorly understood pathogenesis. Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels and Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are highly expressed in malignant tumors and involved in the progression and metastasis of glioblastoma. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a voltage-dependent potassium channel blocker could modulat...

In vitro protection of human lymphocytes from toxic effects of chlorpyrifos by selenium-enriched medicines

Objective(s):  Chlorpyrifos (CP) is a broad-spectrum organophosphorus pesticide used extensively in agricultural and domestic pest control, accounting for 50% of the global insecticidal use. In the present study, protective effects of two selenium-enriched strong antioxidative medicines IMOD and Angipars were examined in human lymphocytes treated with CP in vitro. Materials and Methods: Isolate...
